King on Board with Accessibility Standards

By David Anderson

King councillors stated last week they are on board with the accessibility standards for customer service, which will come into effect in the New Year.

The program is to serve public sector organizations.

The program tries to remove barriers that customers with disabilities frequently face. Under accessibility legislation, Ontario’s first standard for customer service is about to become law. The Accessibility Standards for Customer Service set out rules that businesses and organizations must follow to serve customers
with disabilities.

The staff report to council indicated that those who fail to abide to the standards will face penalties under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). The corporation will be fined a $100,000 dollars for each day from when the offence has occurred.

Mayor Margaret Black said that would not present any problems for King.

“I see this as a perfect plan and I think it’s safe to say that everybody in the township is on board with this,” Black said.
